Enhancing Child Nutrition and Well-being through Soya Plus Production

Recently, in Orlu local government area of Imo State, where we implement the OVC program under the Accelerated Control of HIV Epidemic and Sustainability Solutions (ACCESS) Project in partnership with the Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC) of Orlu Diocese, over 30 OVC caregivers and case managers were trained in soya plus production – a highly nutritious supplement that prevents malnutrition in children and aids their overall well-being.

Strengthening the Bond Between Social and Economic Well-Being

In a bid to ensure the social and economic well-being of enrolled beneficiaries in our Orphans and Vulnerable Children’s (OVC) program, and ultimately achieve viral load suppression among people living with HIV in the demographic, our team in Imo State recently organized a 2-day Community of Practice (CoP) for Household Economic Strengthening (HES) officers and program managers from 12 community-based organisations partnering with Caritas Nigeria to deliver family-centered and child-based interventions at the grassroots level.

Breaking Barriers and Advocating for Gender-Based Violence Intervention in Nigerian Schools

In a bid to further improve collaborations with the Government of Nigeria, particularly in the education sector, a delegation of our team in Imo State led by the State Team Lead (STL), Dr. Jonathan Olarewaju, paid an advocacy visit to the Commissioner of Education, Prof. John-Cliff Chike Nwadike, to seek government support in mainstreaming the “No Means No” gender-based violence intervention across schools in the state.

Supporting Community Health: The Role of the “No Means No Boys” Intervention

The “No Means No Boys SGBV Prevention” intervention, carried out by the Caritas Nigeria OVC Team in Abia State, was executed at Ogbor Community Primary School 1, Aba North Local Government Area, under the supervision of the Presbyterian Church and Service Development OVC CBO. The intervention aimed to create awareness, distribute nutrition commodities, and provide supportive supervision, focusing on the following key activities:

Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Imo State receive business start-up kits

Nine Orphans and Vulnerable Children ( OVC ), supported currently by the Accelerated Control of HIV Epidemic and Sustainability Solutions (ACCESS) project Imo State in partnership with the People’s Health and Economic Development Center (PHEDEC) empowered the beneficiaries with sewing machines, hair dryers, auto-mobile kits, and carpentry tools.

Enhancing Education in Imo State: Caritas Nigeria’s Desk Donation Initiative

To help the children achieve the future they desire through education, Caritas Nigeria, in partnership with the People’s Health and Economic Development Centre (PHEDEC), procured and handed over seven (7) classroom desks for the pupils of Obizi High School in Ezinihitte Community, Mbaise local government area (LGA) of Imo state, as part of our Orphans and Vulnerable Children’s (OVC) intervention.

Commemorating the International Day of the Girl Child

To celebrate International Day of the Girl Child marked annually on October 11, the Caritas Nigeria office in Abia State, in collaboration with the Presbyterian Community Service and Development, Aba, organized an educational session at the Presbyterian Secondary School in Aba, with a view to empowering the students and emphasizing their role in leadership. Discussing this year’s theme, “Invest in Girls’ Rights: Our Leadership, Our Well-being,” representatives of our OVC team and the Manager of the Abia State Political Affairs, Gender, and Special Duties, Mrs. Anastasia Uchenna, encouraged the girls to speak up and seek help in times of danger, molestation, and harassment. The excited young females actively engaged with the facilitators and expressed their appreciation for the valuable information and insights provided.  

Caritas Nigeria Empowers Adolescents in Abia State for Economic Stability

Thirteen (13) adolescents on our OVC program under the ACCESS project in Abia state were recently supported by Caritas Nigeria to build economic stability. On September 28, 2023, the Caritas Nigeria team in Abia State organized a startup kits handover ceremony in Aba South local government area that heralded the distribution of vocational skill kits to 9 female and 4 male young adults as part of the household economic strengthening component of the stable thematic area of the ACCESS project. Caritas Nigeria delivered the economic intervention with the cooperation of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria – a community and faith-based organization – facilitating access to Orphans and Vulnerable Children’s (OVC) services under The U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and CDC-funded Accelerated Control of HIV Epidemic and Sustainability Solutions (ACCESS) project. Prior, the adolescents had successfully undergone training in various skills, including fashion designing, hairdressing, aluminum production, and pastry-making.  

Empowering Vulnerable Communities in Northeast Nigeria: Caritas Nigeria’s CHEERS Project

Given the exponential number and needs of vulnerable persons in Northeast Nigeria, Caritas Nigeria working closely with JDPC Maiduguri is partnering with the Utenriksdepartementet (Norge) through Caritas Norge to implement the Comprehensive Humanitarian Emergency Response and Economic Recovery for Sustainable Livelihoods in Nigeria (CHEERS) project. The intervention seeks to improve the living conditions of target populations while also building their resilience in the face of the biting economic hardship of the vulnerable individuals in Adamawa and Borno States. In line with the project goal, forty (40) persons were selected from Michika and Madagali Local Government Areas and from Bama, and Gwoza Local Government Areas of Adamawa and Borno States respectively, and trained on 16 September 2023 on data collection and how to save lives and protect human dignity in their various communities.
