Tackling Gender-Based Violence at the Grassroots

Share:

Considering the need to take more action at the grassroots to eliminate violence against women and girls, Caritas Nigeria Orphans and Vulnerable Children’s (OVC) program team in Imo state took the 16 Days of Activism sensitization to Holy Trinity Catholic Cathedral in Orlu local government area, where their target audience – Mary League Girls – held their annual thanksgiving mass.
In an interactive lecture, our team, together with some staff of our ‘No Means No’ intervention funded through our ACCESS project by The U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through CDC and U.S. CDC Nigeria, educated the young women about the various forms of gender-based violence (GBV), its impact, and ways to prevent and address it. The girls were also encouraged to foster a culture of respect and equality, report perpetrators of Gender Based Violence, and help to protect their peers from harmful cultural practices.
