Supporting Refugee Learners with Educational Materials in Cross River

With funding and technical support from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), our organisation successfully conducted the verification and distribution of scholastic materials to Cameroonian refugee learners in Akamkpa and Calabar host communities of Cross River State from 9 to 13 February 2026. The intervention was designed to enhance access to quality education, ease the financial burden on refugee households, and promote inclusive learning within host community schools.

A total of 85 learners, 39 boys and 46 girls, across seven schools benefited from the exercise, including Government Primary School Mfamosing, St. Michael Primary School Oban, West Africa Peoples Institute Calabar, Margaret Ekpo Secondary School, Government Secondary School Akor, Government Migrant Primary School Akor, and Community Grammar School Oban. In the presence of school heads, each learner received a standardized education kit containing exercise books, school bags, pencils, pens, rulers, erasers, and sharpeners to support active classroom participation and improved academic performance. Teaching materials such as chalk, board markers, and board dusters were also provided to the schools to strengthen instructional delivery.

Through this protection-and-inclusion-focused initiative, refugee learners are now better equipped to participate meaningfully in their education and achieve improved academic outcomes in their host communities.
