Strengthening Inclusion and Mental Well-Being for Persons with Disabilities

To commemorate the World Day for Persons Living with Disabilities, the Caritas Nigeria MHPSS and CFS Units in Taraba State yesterday held a community dialogue session at GECHAAN Hall, Gembu, Sardauna LGA. The event brought together 33 participants (9 males and 24 females) to discuss the psychological effects of living with disability and promote awareness and understanding within the community.

During the session, participants examined what people with disabilities often experience—emotional struggles, self-esteem and identity challenges, social isolation, trauma, and stress resulting from stigma, discrimination, and inaccessible environments. They also explored why these issues persist, highlighting the prevalence of depression, anxiety, PTSD, and body image concerns, while acknowledging the remarkable coping strategies and resilience many individuals develop.

The dialogue further addressed how communities can improve support systems. Recommendations included expanding access to mental health services, promoting inclusive and accessible environments, strengthening social support structures, enhancing education and awareness on disability and mental health, and encouraging self-advocacy and empowerment among persons with disabilities.

By providing a safe platform for sharing experiences and concerns, the session helped deepen understanding of how disability affects mental well-being and reinforced the collective responsibility to build a more inclusive society.
