Norway and Caritas Nigeria address the humanitarian crisis in Abuja through dialogue

On June 2, 2026, the Norwegian Embassy in Abuja hosted a high-level interactive meeting between Norway’s Deputy Foreign Minister, H.E. Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik, Ambassador H.E. Svein Baera, and selected Norway-supported humanitarian partners to address Nigeria’s escalating humanitarian challenges.

Caritas Nigeria participated through its Director of Humanitarian Services, Nkese Udongwo, and Humanitarian Advisor, Agidah Michael Adie, joining key partners including Norwegian Church Aid, Norwegian Refugee Council, and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The strategic dialogue focused on Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, displacement crises, and growing economic hardship affecting vulnerable populations across the country. Participants emphasized the urgent need to shift from short-term humanitarian relief to long-term resilience building by linking humanitarian action with sustainable economic development.

A key point raised was the importance of aligning Nigeria’s development priorities with responsible private sector investment to stimulate job creation and broader economic recovery. However, stakeholders stressed that lasting security remains a fundamental prerequisite for enabling a stable environment where international businesses and development initiatives can thrive.

The meeting also highlighted the need for local humanitarian actors to strengthen institutional capacity, technical expertise, and accountability systems to effectively manage larger resource flows and deliver higher-quality interventions.
