New Health, Education and Security Facilities Handed Over in Ogoja

With funding support from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) through UNHCR Nigeria, Caritas Nigeria recently commissioned and handed over several community infrastructure projects to residents of Ogoja Local Government Area in Cross River State. The commissioning ceremony, held on March 6, 2026, brought together key stakeholders, including Irene Omondi, Head of UNHCR Nigeria’s Ogoja Sub-Office; Olubunmi Fasogba, Caritas Nigeria Programme Manager for the UNHCR South-South Project; Idara Effiong of Caritas Nigeria; and Christopher Agbeh, Chairman of the Ogoja Local Government Council.

During the visit, the delegation commissioned and handed over a fully furnished primary healthcare facility and a staff quarters equipped with a 10KVA solar power installation in Ukende Community. The team also commissioned a second primary healthcare facility in Adagom 2 Community, where essential medical equipment and another 10KVA solar installation were provided alongside other upgrades aimed at strengthening healthcare service delivery for Cameroonian refugees and host community members.

In Adagom 1 Community, the delegation handed over a newly constructed police post to the Nigeria Police Force. The facility includes office spaces, holding cells, an armoury, and modern sanitation facilities designed to enhance security and law enforcement services within the community.

The final stop was at St. Peter’s Primary School, Adagom, where the team handed over a newly constructed block of three classrooms, along with 240-capacity pupils’ desks and other school improvement facilities aimed at creating a more conducive learning environment for pupils.

Following the commissioning activities, Fr. Peter Audu, Executive Secretary/CEO of Caritas Nigeria, visited the project sites with key staff to assess the completed interventions across the Ogoja communities. He commended the dedication of the project team and applauded the strong partnership between Caritas Nigeria and UNHCR, expressing confidence that the collaboration would continue to deliver impactful interventions in support of vulnerable populations.
