As part of ongoing activities marking the 16 Days of Activism, the Caritas Nigeria Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) team in Gembu, Taraba State, recently conducted a group therapy session for survivors of gender-based violence (GBV). The session aimed to provide emotional support, raise awareness on digital forms of violence, and strengthen the resilience of the 33 women in attendance.
During the engagement, the team sensitized participants on digital violence against women, including cyber harassment, online hate speech, image-based abuse, and sextortion. They also highlighted the severe psychological effects, such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, and withdrawal from digital spaces, helping survivors understand the broader impacts of online harm.
The group therapy session offered a safe space where survivors could share their experiences, process their emotions, and connect with others facing similar challenges. The facilitators provided supportive guidance, validated their feelings, and emphasized the importance of seeking help, reporting incidents, and recognizing that healing is a gradual, personal journey.
In closing, the team encouraged the women to stay vigilant against online predators, engage confidently but cautiously in digital platforms, and continue supporting one another as part of their collective recovery and empowerment.
