Fighting Food Insecurity
Caritas Nigeria has taken a holistic and community-driven approach to fighting food insecurity by combining immediate food aid with long-term agricultural support and livelihood programs. Unlike traditional food relief efforts, Caritas Nigeria empowers vulnerable communities through training in climate-smart agriculture, distribution of improved seeds and farming tools, and support for small-scale farmers to boost local food production. We also partner with local and international organizations to strengthen food systems, ensure sustainability, and build resilience against future shocks such as conflict, displacement, and climate change.

Livelihoods Initiative in Borno State
Caritas Nigeria’s Livelihoods Initiative in Borno State has distinguished itself by combining tailored life‑skills training with vocational and agricultural empowerment, underpinned by partnerships like UNHCR. In 2024, in towns such as Bama, Banki, Monguno, and Maiduguri, they enrolled adolescents and caregivers in training to produce goods like pasta, soap, men’s caps, and petroleum jelly, empowering over 200 participants to build sustainable income streams and self‑reliance. Unlike broader livelihood programs, this initiative enriches beneficiaries with both practical vocational skills and context‑appropriate support, forging pathways from crisis dependence toward entrepreneurship and resilience in conflict‑affected communities.

Hunger Crises
Caritas Nigeria has adopted a distinctive approach in hunger crisis areas by integrating emergency food assistance with sustainable agricultural interventions. Rather than focusing solely on short-term relief, the organization empowers affected communities through climate-smart farming, nutrition education, and livelihood support. This holistic strategy not only addresses immediate food needs but also strengthens long-term food security and community resilience.

Climate Change
Caritas Nigeria has actively responded to Pope Francis’ call in Laudato Si’ by promoting environmental stewardship and climate action across its programs. Through community sensitization, tree planting campaigns, and the promotion of eco-friendly agricultural practices, Caritas Nigeria integrates the principles of Laudato Si’ into its development work. By educating communities on the impact of climate change and encouraging responsible care for creation, the organization fosters a culture of sustainability in line with the Pope’s vision for ecological conversion and social justice.
