From July 14–15, 2026, the House of Representatives hosted the 3rd Edition of the National Assembly (NASS) Open Week, centered on the theme, “Three Years of the 10th Assembly: Advancing Transparency, Inclusion and Reform.” Serving as the House’s premier public outreach initiative, this event aimed to bridge the gap between lawmakers and the public. It did so by highlighting the assembly’s legislative milestones, explaining the inner workings of lawmaking and oversight, and creating a direct space for citizens to engage with their representatives.
Recognizing the importance of this platform, Caritas Nigeria participated in the event with the support of CAFOD and International IDEA. The organization was represented by Mr. Utsa Ushahemba Vitalis (Legislative Liaison Officer of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria – CBCN) and Mr. Joseph Nkamuke (Good Governance Lead), emphasizing the critical role faith-based and civil society groups play in strengthening democratic accountability.
The Church’s high-level support was highlighted by His Eminence John Cardinal Onaiyekan, who presented a goodwill message on behalf of the Catholic Church. In his remarks, the Cardinal reaffirmed the Church’s dedication to advocating for ethical leadership, promoting transparent governance, and inspiring active citizen participation across Nigeria.
Furthering this call for structural integrity, Mr. Utsa Vitalis joined a distinguished panel alongside Members of the House of Representatives, Federal Ministers, and Senate and House Committee Directors. The panelists discussed practical steps to tighten legislative oversight, elevate institutional accountability, and ensure that the benefits of democratic governance are tangibly felt by all Nigerians.
Ultimately, the National Assembly Open Week functioned as a vital collaborative forum. By bringing together policymakers, civil society organizations, development partners, and key stakeholders, the event renewed a collective push toward establishing a more transparent, inclusive, and responsive governance system in Nigeria.
