Caritas Nigeria Charts a New Course on Performance, Integrity and Staff Wellbeing

What happens when an organization pauses to reflect, learn, and chart a stronger path forward?

Caritas Nigeria provided an answer to this question today as it convened its second Staff General Meeting of the year, bringing together staff from its offices across the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria. The session, moderated by Williams Mayah and Ijeoma Akadoronye, served as a platform for reflection, learning, accountability, and organizational growth.

What key message did the leadership deliver to staff?

In his opening remarks, the Executive Secretary/CEO, Rev. Fr. Peter Audu, challenged staff to embrace innovation, integration, and creativity in their daily work. He also drew attention to the upcoming staff performance appraisal, encouraging all employees to strengthen their commitment to their responsibilities and contribute more effectively to the organization’s mission.

How can organizations protect themselves from fraud and financial misconduct?

This important question formed the basis of a presentation by the Chief of Party, Dr. John Oko, who highlighted best practices in effective financial management and accountability. He explained the concept of the fraud triangle—motivation, opportunity, and rationalization—as key drivers of fraudulent behavior and outlined common forms of fraud that organizations may encounter.

Staff were reminded of Caritas Nigeria’s zero-tolerance stance on fraud and were encouraged to remain vigilant by promptly reporting any suspicious activities.

What concerns did staff raise during the interactive session?

Participants engaged in robust discussions on issues such as false accusations, whistle-blower protection, internal controls, and accountability mechanisms. The session generated practical recommendations aimed at strengthening anti-fraud measures, including the development of a comprehensive anti-fraud policy and the reinforcement of existing whistleblowing systems.

What other initiatives are being introduced to support staff welfare and development?

Dr. Gabriel Gbenyi presented plans for the reintroduction of the staff welfare scheme, a significant initiative designed to ease financial burdens and provide both emotional and practical support to staff members. Additional updates were provided on Tax Identification Number (TIN) generation, the Caritas Nigeria Knowledge Hub, the staff exit scheme, and ongoing cooperative activities.

What was the outcome of the meeting?

In his closing remarks, Rev. Fr. Peter Audu expressed appreciation to all participants and facilitators for their active engagement and valuable contributions. He also announced new leadership within the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), welcomed the return of the staff welfare scheme as a positive development, and encouraged staff to prioritize their health and well-being.

The meeting concluded on a hopeful note, reaffirming Caritas Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its workforce, promoting accountability, and creating a more supportive and productive work environment.
