Caritas Nigeria marked the climax of its 15th Anniversary celebration with a special symposium held on September 25 at its Country Office in Abuja. The event was organized under the theme, “Sustainability in the Face of the Changing Funding Landscape,” reflecting the organization’s focus on long-term impact and adaptability in an evolving donor environment.
The celebration commenced with a Holy Mass presided over by His Eminence, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, and concelebrated by Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, Archbishop of Abuja, and Most Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins, Archbishop of Lagos and Board Chair of Caritas Nigeria. In his homily, Archbishop Martins commended Caritas Nigeria for its steadfast commitment to the vision laid out by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN). He emphasized the organization’s adherence to the values of honesty, integrity, transparency, and accountability, and offered prayers for the donors and funders who make Caritas Nigeria’s work possible.
Following the Mass, the symposium brought together partners, donors, clergy, and well-wishers to reflect on Caritas Nigeria’s journey and future. Fr. Peter Audu, the Executive Secretary, highlighted the organization’s impact, noting that more than 18 million people have benefitted from its programs across various sectors. Rev. Fr. Augustine Okochi, Deputy Secretary General of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria and Director of Pastoral Agents, also acknowledged the significant role Caritas Nigeria has played in advancing the mission of the Church and contributing to national development.
A key feature of the event was a panel discussion on the anniversary theme, which offered practical insights into sustaining humanitarian efforts amid declining funding. Panelists explored strategic solutions for ensuring continuity, effectiveness, and accountability in service delivery.
In his closing remarks, Dr. John Oko, Chief of Party/Principal Investigator, expressed appreciation to all attendees for their continued solidarity and support. He encouraged Caritas Nigeria staff to remain steadfast in their mission, demonstrating resilience, compassion, and a deep commitment to serving humanity.
