The story of Florence Abu, an indigene of Etsako West LGA of Edo State is one that gives hope to a lot of young girls out there.
Ending up as a migrant returnee who suffered sexual exploitation at the hands of human traffickers, a friend of hers, worried about her situation referred her to Caritas Nigeria’s Stable Trained and Empowered Me (STEM) Project, where she was assessed, trained and a hairdressing salon business set up for her. Today she earns about N3,000 daily from her hairdressing salon.
It turned out also that her traffickers were eventually apprehended, and each of them got justice for their unlawful act through the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP). Equally, the local assistant pastor who deceitfully enticed her and the human traffickers bagged 14 years’ jail term each, while her traffickers’ mother is serving a 10-year jail sentence as the law stipulates for human trafficking culprits.
STEM Project is one of GIZ’s reintegration packages for migrant returnees in Nigeria.
