Caritas Nigeria Strengthens Church-Based GBV Prevention Efforts in Imo State

Caritas Nigeria, led by Dr Eugene Onu, conducted a two-day working visit to Imo State from 6–7 May 2026, engaging religious leaders and pastoral workers to strengthen the implementation of its Ford Foundation–funded GBV Prevention Project within Church structures. The visit focused on addressing harmful gender norms and advancing respect, inclusion, and human dignity for women, men, girls, and boys by leveraging the Catholic Church’s extensive grassroots presence.

Through a congregational approach grounded in Catholic Social Teaching, participants were oriented on the project’s goals and implementation processes while receiving practical training to enhance their capacity for community engagement. Selected dioceses were also supported with essential equipment, including laptops, printers, and tablets, to aid effective programme delivery. Overall, the initiative continues to empower the Church to influence positive social behaviour, promote gender equality, and foster a culture of peace and social cohesion.
