Caritas Nigeria Champions Community-Led Action Against Gender-Based Violence in Adamawa and Bayelsa

Caritas Nigeria, supported by the Citi Foundation, convened a series of women- and youth-led community forums in Wuro Jebbe, Adamawa State, and Otuoba/Otuoke, Bayelsa State. These engagements were a direct response to the high prevalence of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in these regions, aiming to dismantle the systemic culture of silence by creating interactive platforms for education and safe expression. Led by Margaret Sampson, the Caritas Nigeria Protection/GBV Lead, the initiative brought together 86 participants, including key community leaders, to foster a collective front against social injustice.

During these sessions, participants were equipped with essential skills to identify and combat the physical, psychological, and social impacts of violence. The training focused on debunking myths, building assertiveness, and implementing “Do No Harm” intervention strategies. By addressing specific local barriers such as victim-blaming and the normalization of abuse, the forums empowered attendees to establish community-led support networks. Caritas Nigeria remains committed to these sustained awareness efforts, ensuring that the dignity of survivors is upheld through increased protection and the creation of permanent safe spaces.
