How Caritas Nigeria Works on the Environment

Caritas Nigeria is passionately committed to safeguarding the environment by fostering stewardship and advancing sustainability which ensures that everyone enjoys a green and healthy environment.

Our Strategies for Environmental Stewardship include the following:

  1. Integral Ecology: We utilize holistic approaches that consider both ecological and social factors, promoting a balanced and sustainable relationship with our natural environment.
  2. Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA): We empower farmers with sustainable farming techniques such as agroforestry, water conservation, organic farming, and sustainable land management to adapt to climate variability and improve crop yields.
  3. Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation: Our efforts include reforestation and afforestation initiatives, advocating for renewable energy, and collaborating with other organizations to develop innovative solutions to climate challenges.
  4. Tree Planting Campaigns: Inspired by the vision of Laudato Si, we spearhead a national tree-planting campaign, motivating dioceses to plant 20,000 trees annually.
  5. Environmental Awareness and Education: We enhance community awareness about ecological preservation and sustainable practices through various educational initiatives.
  6. Partnership and Collaboration: We work with local and international organizations, sharing knowledge and resources to tackle environmental challenges collectively.
  7. Renewable Energy Advocacy: Our advocacy extends to promoting the adoption of clean technologies and renewable energy sources, contributing to Nigeria’s transition towards a low-carbon economy.
  8. Community Empowerment for Environmental Justice: We collaborate with marginalized communities to amplify their voices, provide essential resources, and foster resilience against environmental degradation and climate change.

By integrating faith-based perspectives with practical solutions, Caritas Nigeria is at the forefront of driving environmental sustainability and justice.
