Caritas Nigeria joined government institutions, humanitarian organizations, faith-based groups, academia, refugee-led organizations, and private sector representatives in commemorating World Refugee Day 2026. The event, organized by UNHCR Nigeria and its partners to mark the 75th Anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention, was held at the ECOWAS Commission Auditorium in Abuja and served as a platform for dialogue, advocacy, and partnership-building aimed at advancing refugee protection and durable solutions in Nigeria.
As a longstanding implementing partner of UNHCR, Caritas Nigeria participated in a high-level panel discussion on “Protection, Solidarity and Solutions,” where it shared experiences and lessons from its refugee protection interventions in Cross River State. During the session, the organization highlighted achievements in community-based protection, Gender-Based Violence (GBV) prevention and response, child protection, peaceful coexistence initiatives, and Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP) mechanisms, all of which contribute to improving the well-being and dignity of refugees and host communities.
The commemoration underscored the importance of solidarity with refugees and the need for sustained collaboration among stakeholders to address displacement challenges. It also provided an opportunity to strengthen partnerships, promote inclusive and community-centred approaches, and advance efforts that foster resilience, social cohesion, protection, and self-reliance among displaced populations.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment by Caritas Nigeria and its partners to leave no one behind by supporting refugees and host communities through sustainable interventions and durable solutions. The engagement further reinforced the organization’s partnership with UNHCR and its dedication to promoting refugee protection and improving the lives of vulnerable populations across Nigeria.
