Caritas Nigeria, a unit of the Church and Society Department of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, is co-hosting the department’s 2023 Annual General Meeting under the theme, “Economic Empowerment and Capacity Strengthening for Self-Reliance and Community Resilience in Nigeria”.
Focusing on the principles of social justice and human dignity to explore strategies for attaining a stable economy, the gathering held that sustainable development and equality can only be achieved through self-reliance and community resilience initiatives, as aptly noted by Caritas Nigeria Executive Secretary/CEO, Fr. Uchechukwu Obodoechina, who was represented by his Deputy, Rev. Fr. Babangida Audu.
In his keynote address, the Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos and Episcopal Chair of the Church and Society Department, Most Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins, represented by the Auxiliary Bishop of Minna Diocese and Episcopal Chair of the Family and Human Life Unit, Most Rev. Luka Gopep, stressed that wholistic community resilience can only be achieved by empowering the grassroots.
With a representation from the 60 dioceses, the 3-day meeting has in attendance Coordinators of the units of the Church and Society Department, namely, Education, Family and Human Life, Health, Justice Development and Peace Commission/Caritas, and Migration.
