Bridging the Gap in Nutritional Services and Strengthening Communities to Build Resilience for Positive Nutritional Outcomes

Project Goal: To contribute to Nigeria’s achievement of nutrition sector strategic priorities by reducing the spread of acute malnutrition among pregnant and lactating mothers and children under 5 years old in Shani LGA of Borno State.

Targets: Children (0-59 months), pregnant women, lactating mothers,

    • Improve and enhance the access of vulnerable pregnant and lactating mothers and children under 5 years of age to effective malnutrition prevention services
  • Treat Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) cases in Stabilization Centers (SC) and Outpatient Treatment Programs, and provide care and support services in Shani LGA.

 

Activities:

In-patient management of SAM with medical complications:

  • Monthly cooking demonstrations at the community and facility levels to enlighten mothers and caregivers on how to prepare and utilize local nutritious complimentary food appropriately.
  • Provision of routine medications and therapeutic milk to SAM-affected children at the SC.
  • Feeding mothers and caregivers of admitted children three square meals daily.
  • One-on-one and group counselling of mothers and caregivers in the SC on appropriate Maternal Infant Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN) practices.
  • Distribution of mothers’ sanitary supplies and soap to all the caregivers for hygiene promotion.
  • MIYCN counselling during antenatal care, immunization, and Maternal Nutrition and Child Health Week (MNCHW).
  • Support supplementation of Vitamin A to children 659 months during MNCH
