Following the recent armed attack on Effeyi Utikpi Ugboju Community in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, which led to the loss of lives, injuries, displacement of families, and destruction of homes, Caritas Nigeria, with support from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, provided emergency humanitarian assistance to affected residents.
This intervention formed part of a joint humanitarian assessment mission coordinated by the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (Benue-SEMA) on 31 July 2026. The mission assessed the immediate needs of affected households by profiling families who lost loved ones or were displaced to identify their protection concerns and humanitarian needs, enabling the rapid delivery of critical emergency assistance to the most vulnerable.
As part of the emergency response, Caritas Nigeria, with UNHCR support, distributed essential relief materials from the UNHCR emergency stockpile to affected households. The items provided included Type B stainless steel kitchen sets, long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets, mats, solar lamps, and blankets. These relief items are intended to help families address urgent basic needs and improve their living conditions in the aftermath of the attack and displacement.
Caritas Nigeria and UNHCR reiterated their commitment to supporting conflict-affected communities and ensuring that vulnerable populations continue to receive timely and appropriate humanitarian assistance. Additional support interventions will be considered upon completion and validation of the profiling and assessment data collected during the mission.
