The Church as a community must practice love and Caritas shares this mission of the Church by providing service to the community. This work requires professional competence as well as a “formation of heart” which testifies to a faith expressed through charity.
Inspired by Gospel values and the Catholic Social Teaching, Caritas responds to disasters, promotes integral human development and advocates on issues that affect the root causes of poverty and conflict. She is organised at local (parish), diocesan, national, regional and international level, and works with the poor, vulnerable and excluded, regardless of race or religion.
Pope Francis asserts that Caritas is “an essential part of the Church” and that it “institutionalizes love in the Church”. As he put it, Caritas has two dimensions: action; and a divine dimension “situated in the heart of the Church”.
