Emergency Response & Humanitarian Assistance
There are several kinds of emergency situations arising from disasters that affects people around the world. Disasters range from natural to man-made and cause people to be displaced. In most cases they lose their sources of livelihoods , a siituation that calls for immediate action and an urgent need for assistance or relief.
Emergencies can strike at any time, overwhelming the most vulnerable people and leaving them with nothing. And this is why there is Caritas, the helping arm of the Catholic Church. Caritas acts fast to save lives and livelihoods in emergencies and disasters.
Responding to emergencies is a core mandate of Caritas Nigeria. Caritas Internationalis has a unique worldwide network of 165 member organizations among which is Caritas Nigeria. In Nigeria Caritas\JDPC is a network of 55 Diocesan development and humanitarian organizations. Caritas Nigeria has experience and skills to respond efficiently and effectively to humanitarian situations. Its strong roots – put down over decades – means Caritas is there both before the emergency and afterwards.
Caritas Nigeria’ Emergency and Humanitarian Response (EHR) interventions are usually designed and implemented together with the local Caritas in the affected areas in the 55 local (diocesan) Caritas offices spread across the 36 states and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Nigeria.
Caritas Nigeria has implemented several emergency response and humanitarian assistance programs in the areas of; food insecurity (using cash transfers and food voucher distribution), flood relief activities, humanitarian assistance (food and non-food items) to victims of conflict and Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) responses. Caritas works closely with the Office of the UN Coordinator for Humanitarian Assistance and provides regular updates to them on the different humanitarian response activities implemented across the Caritas network.
Caritas looks into the future, to investing more in its emergency preparedness and response skills to face emergencies like floods or draughts. It is energetically focused on disaster risk reduction – which means taking steps to lessen the harm done by repeated natural disasters in the same country or area.
Caritas also forges dialogue to prevent the conflicts which cause suffering and loss and works to transform active conflicts into peaceful settlements.
