Bringing Smiles to Health workers and Patients in Uchi
For staff of NKST hospital, Uchi, Benue State, it has been smiles all the way ever since Caritas Nigeria stepped into their facility in February 2016 as a partner in a PEPFAR-funded SUSTAIN program that provides HIV care and treatment to communities suffering from the scourge of HIV and AIDS in Benue State, Nigeria.
Staff have witnessed tremendous change and transformation in the manner they work, their work environment, the tools they work with and the quality of services they now provide to their patients.
One unit in the hospital that has continued to glow in joy is the Pharmacy unit where Mwuese Molly Akember heads. For years and up till early this year, the pharmacy was in a sorry state of dysfunction: Drugs were dumped on the floor (as there were no racks for putting them); space was a problem with poor ventilation that affected the state of the drugs; and, the entire structure was in a deplorable state.
Considering how critical a functional pharmacy unit is in a healthcare delivery facility, Caritas Nigeria confronted the challenge headlong. Rolling out their Health Systems Strengthening program, the pharmacy unit received structural upgrade while relevant equipment were quickly installed to bring it to universally acceptable standard.
Since after the renovation, the pharmacy can now boast of quality and well-preserved drugs, a conducive work environment, computers and electronic dispensing tools. Overall, patients are the happier for it as they spend less time in the hospital and are assured of quality medications.
The transformation in the hospital has made a huge impact on the entire Uchi community and its environs. Beaming with smiles now, as she steps into a very conducive, well-ventilated and befitting pharmacy office, Mwuese Akember, the Pharmacy Focal Person is overwhelmed with joy as she commends the Caritas Team for their good work. “I want to Thank CCFN for what they have done for me and for NKST Uchi. They have really shown that they have the welfare of the community at heart”. She goes further: “For somebody who doesn’t know you to come and start taking care of you like this, it is just wonderful! God Bless Caritas Nigeria.”
